Understanding Bank Identification Numbers (BIN / IIN)

The first 6 to 8 digits of a payment card number constitute the Issuer Identification Number (IIN), historically and commonly referred to as the Bank Identification Number (BIN). In 2017, the International Organization for Standardization updated standard ISO/IEC 7812-1 to expand the IIN from 6 digits to 8 digits to accommodate growing global issuance demand.

A Bank Identification Number (BIN), also known as an Issuer Identification Number (IIN), consists of the first 6 to 8 digits of a payment card. This tool analyzes public card-number structure such as the entered 6–8 digit BIN/IIN prefix, Major Industry Identifier (MII), and supported card-network prefix patterns. It does not query private issuing-bank, cardholder, account, balance, or authorization databases.

Why does this tool only accept 6 to 8 digits?

To protect consumer privacy and adhere to payment security standards, this tool accepts only the public network prefix (6 to 8 digits). Entering complete card numbers is strictly prohibited and blocked by client-side validation.

Does a recognized prefix mean an account exists or is authorized for payment?

Passing these prefix and format checks does not verify that an account exists, that a card is active, or that it can be authorized for payment. This tool only interprets supported BIN/IIN and card-network patterns and does not contact an issuer or payment network.

Does this tool send entered prefixes to a server?

The BIN/IIN analysis runs locally in your browser and does not intentionally submit the entered prefix to our application server.
